Getting a reverse osmosis drinking water system for your home is a great way to provide healthier, and purer tasting water for you and your family. But some people would prefer reverse osmosis water that has a little more flavor to it.
How Can You Make Reverse Osmosis Water Taste Better? Adding calcium to reverse osmosis water will give it a milky taste, very much like non-reverse osmosis water but without the extra sodium. Adding powdered or liquid drink mixes will add assorted flavor and a little fruit juice will add great chemical-free flavor.
It’s actually quite simple, adding desired flavors to reverse osmosis water will not only make the reverse osmosis water taste better but since your reverse osmosis system has removed the majority of the dissolved solids in the water, the added flavors will taste even better.
Some ideas to make your reverse osmosis water taste better and add a little flavor to it.

Add an inline carbon filter:
Carbon is able to filter out smaller particles than a regular filter. Many small particles can cause water to have an odd or unpleasant taste to it.
Adding an in-line carbon filter can remove these tiny particles and leave your water free of unwanted tastes.
Adding an in-line carbon filter is very easy to do. They are available for 1/4 inch tubing or 3/8 inch tubing and require virtually no tools to install.
Simply shut off the water supplying your reverse osmosis system and the shut-off valve on your reverse osmosis storage tank. Then turn on your reverse osmosis faucet and wait until the water stops flowing completely.
Have a towel handy, because there will be a little water. Next, cut the tubing going to your reverse osmosis faucet at a location that is easily reachable, as this is where you will be installing the filter.
Once you have cut the tubing, remove any burrs or sharp edges from the two ends of the tubing. Insert the ends of the tubing into the filter with the output of the filter connecting to the tube going up to the faucet.
Push the ends into the filter firmly, until you feel the stop, then give them a little tug to make sure that they are inserted securely.
Once you are satisfied that the tubes are inserted correctly, wipe off any water that is left over, and turn the water to the reverse osmosis system back on.
Your waters taste should improve immediately if the unpleasant taste was due to particles in your water. This carbon filter should be changed regularly, along with your regular filters.
Add a calcium cartridge:
A calcium cartridge will actually add flavor to reverse osmosis water by dissolving a small amount of calcium back into the water.
This will give the reverse osmosis water a milky taste, much as it had before going through your reverse osmosis system but without the extra salt.
For light to medium reverse osmosis water use, you can install an in-line calcium cartridge the same way as you would install a carbon filter, or you could install a filter housing with a calcium cartridge inside for families and other higher volume water usage.
Having an alkalinization stage for your RO System:
If you are looking to purchase a reverse osmosis drinking water system, but are concerned about the water tasting odd, consider a reverse osmosis system that has a stage for making the water more alkaline.
A reverse osmosis system with an alkalinity stage will increase the pH of the water, which for many people, improves the taste of reverse osmosis water because the acidic water that is produced by reverse osmosis can taste different, to different people.
Acidic reverse osmosis water can react with dental work, medicines, and even the chemical make-up of a person’s saliva to produce a different taste from one person to the next.
The process of reverse osmosis removes minerals that would normally help reduce the acidity of water, and by having an alkalization stage in your system, the acid can be neutralized, making the water taste better to some people.
Electrolyte blends or trace mineral supplement drops:
Liquid mineral supplements and electrolyte additives often have a pleasant taste to them as well as having a health benefit. Just a small amount, added to a pitcher of reverse osmosis water, will provide plenty of healthy and tasty water.
Mineral drops and Electrolyte Powders are available in many flavors and varieties, but I only recommend getting them from a well-rated distributor.
Mineralized Sea Salt:
Using sea salt is becoming extremely popular and for good reason. Sea salt is considered to be a healthier alternative to standard table salt that is known to be un-healthy when used regularly.
People find using just a pinch of sea salt in their reverse osmosis water adds a flavor that resembles water that has not been filtered. And the amount of sea salt used is entirely up to you.
I prefer using the fine sea salt that is about the same size as table salt, but some people like to use the coarse crystal sea salt.
Alkaline Water Filter Pitcher:
You have probably seen water filtering pitchers for years, but most people don’t know that there are water filtering pitchers that also neutralize acidity in water.
By neutralizing the acid in the water, the water will become alkaline.
Alkaline water is considered to be better tasting than acidic water, and many people believe that alkaline water has many health benefits.
Considering the filtering and acid-neutralizing benefits of an alkaline water filter pitcher, I am a little surprised at how reasonably priced they are.
Green tea or herbs:
Drinking green tea is becoming more popular every day. And the reason for this is that it has a nice mild flavor, and is considered to be healthy.
What most people overlook is that you can use all sorts of herbs to make an herbal green tea blend of your very own.
A sprig of mint, or some dried fruit in some hot reverse osmosis water makes for a great, yet light tasting tea that you can enjoy by the cup, or over ice in a pitcher.
Flavored ice cubes made with reverse osmosis water:
Here’s a neat trick to add a little flavor of your choice to your reverse osmosis water. Make a pitcher of your favorite flavor drink mix.
Pour into an ice cube tray to have flavored ice cubes that you can put into your reverse osmosis water for just a little taste.
Just a few drops of liquid flavoring:
Liquid water flavoring drops are everywhere! You can find them in your local grocery store and even online. They come in all types of flavors, are easy to use, and are very inexpensive.
Individual flavor packets:
Just as readily available as liquid flavor drops, these single-serve water flavor packets come in flavors like ice tea, lemonade, raspberry lemonade, grape, and dozens more.
Just tear open the pack and add it to your reverse osmosis water as you would any other water.
Lemon or lime juice:
I don’t know about you, but I always have bottles of lemon juice and lime juice in the refrigerator.
Not only do I use them to add a citrus zing to my iced tea, but I also use them in my drinking water.
Other juice drinks like grape, cranberry, or mango, also make great tasting water without adding extra chemicals or processed sugar.
Energy drinks:
For the active person who likes to get a little extra boost from what they drink. Energy drinks are often high in caffeine and sugar, so just a little in your reverse osmosis can go a long way.
Add just a little to make your reverse osmosis water less bland, or add a lot for a mid-day energy boost.
Antacid tablets:
This may sound a little odd, but antacid tablets contain calcium which is one of the primary minerals that contribute to the taste of water.
Unsoftened water is often preferred to softened water for drinking because it has a smooth, milky taste to it.
This milky taste of unsoftened water is mostly the taste of calcium. Since a water softener removes calcium from the water, it is also removing the taste of calcium from the water.
If you put one flavored antacid tablet into an 8-ounce glass of reverse osmosis water, you might be surprised at how much it tastes just as good as your untreated water, and without the salt that you may have in the water before the reverse osmosis.
They also come in many flavors which will make your reverse osmosis water taste great, and keep it healthy.
Dissolvable mints:
You know those after-dinner mints that look like chalk, but taste really good. Well, they dissolve in a glass of reverse osmosis water as well as dissolve in your mouth, and they make the water taste great too.
You can keep a bag of these in your pocket or car as well as your home. And then just pop one onto your reverse osmosis water whenever you want to add a little flavor to your water.
I find that all of these ways to make your reverse osmosis water taste better work very well, and all of them are quite inexpensive. If you would like to make your reverse osmosis water taste better, give these ideas a try.
Just add a table spoon full of Himalayan black salt in 20 litres of water and it will taste wonderful.
Great idea Samuel, thanks for the tip!
