You’ve just purchased a new Culligan water softener and you are looking forward to no longer having hard water spots on your dishes and water fixtures. All you need to do is add salt to your Culligan water softener, but do you have to use Culligan salt in your Culligan water softener?
You do NOT have to use Culligan brand water softener salt in a standard Culligan water softener. Culligan water softener salt is a high-quality solar salt that is made using evaporation by the sun and wind just like many other solar crystal water softener salts.
A water softener uses the sodium ions from brine created by salt to regenerate (clean) the water softener resin in its resin tank so the resin can remove hard ions from your water. Culligan water softener salt is produced in the same way as other brands of water softener salts like Morton or Diamond Crystal.
All water-softener salts will dissolve and create a brine that contains the sodium ions that are needed for a water softener to regenerate its water-softener resin.

- What Salt Is Best For A Culligan Water Softener?
- What Kind Of Water Softener Salt Does Culligan Offer?

- Is Culligan Water Softener Salt More Expensive Than Other Brands?
What Salt Is Best For A Culligan Water Softener?
It is important to use a very-pure water softener salt in a Culligan water softener to keep it working properly and efficiently.
However, there are several brands of water softener salts that are equally very pure and readily available in your local hardware stores for curbside pickup, or even delivered right to your home.
I highly recommend using a high-purity solar crystal salt like Morton or Diamond Crystal for Culligan and all other brands of water softeners such as Whirlpool, Aquasure, or Fleck.
Culligan Pro-Soft water softener salt is 99.6% pure salt which is actually purer than most other water softener salts that are about 99.47% pure salt, but the .13% difference is relatively insignificant in my opinion and will not affect the efficiency of a water softener enough to be a concern.
What Kind Of Water Softener Salt Does Culligan Offer?
Culligan offers Pro-Soft (Solar Crystals), Care Cubes (Pellets), and K-Life (Sodium Free Salt) which are all effective for the regeneration of water softener resin in a Culligan or other water softener.
The prices of Culligan salts can vary from one dealer to another and salt delivery costs are often quite high, but you would need to contact your local Culligan dealer for current prices.
How Is Culligan Water Softener Salt Different?
Culligan Pro-Soft solar crystal salt is slightly purer than most readily available water softener salts like Morton or Diamond Crystal but the price of Culligan salt can be significantly higher.
In my opinion, the slightly higher purity in Culligan water softener salt does not justify the higher price when you can usually go to your local hardware store just around the corner and pick up Morton or Diamond Crystal high-purity water softener salt.
Can Culligan Salt Be Used In NON-Culligan Water Softeners?
Absolutely! Culligan brand water softener salt is a high-quality product that would work very well with any brand of water softener system.
Many popular water softener brands recommend using high-purity solar salt just like Culligan brand water softener salt for their systems.
Is Culligan Water Softener Salt More Expensive Than Other Brands?
Since the cost of Culligan water softener salt can vary from one area to another, Culligan water softener salt may or may not be more expensive in your area, but generally, I have found that you will pay a little more for Culligan brand water softener salt.
You can usually only get Culligan brand water softener salt directly from a Culligan authorized dealer. Still, you can often find Morton and Diamond Crystal water softener salt online as well as from your local store.
To Sum Up:
Culligan water softener salts are produced much in the same way as other brands of water softener salts so there is no need to only use Culligan brand water softener salt in your Culligan water softener.
Use a high-purity water softener salt in your Culligan water softener for the best efficiency and performance but you can use other high-purity water softener salts by other brands than Culligan.
Hi Paul-
Tom here. I just purchased a home with a Culligan Water Softener system installed. It is currently unplugged, and according to the previous owner has not been used for years.
I opened the salt bin, and there is perhaps 6 inches of water.
The instruction manual was wisely kept on top of the unit.
What do I need to do to start using the unit?
Thank you so much !
Hello Tom and thank you for the question
If the water softener has not been used for several years, you may need to re-test your water to determine the water hardness and check for iron in the water.
Once you have your water test results, you should go through the programming instructions to set the computer correctly for your water characteristics.
You may want to remove any debris from the bottom of the brine tank but if it is relatively clean it should be fine.
I would highly recommend that you add a dose of water softener resin cleaner to the brine tank and manually regenerate the resin once a day for 2-3 days to thoroughly regenerate the resin and sanitize the inside of the system.
Other than that, just keep and eye on it for a few weeks to check for leaks or high water level in the brine tank. If you don’t feel that it is working as it should after a few weeks, contact your local dealer to get it serviced. They will test your water, program the system correctly and clean the internal screen and injector to make sure it is working properly.
I hope this was helpful
Paul
