Do Brita Filters Add Anything To Water?

You may already have heard that Brita water filters are great for removing certain impurities from your drinking water that can make your drinking water taste bad or cause odors in your drinking water, but does a Brita water filter add anything to your water to make it better?

Britas’ standard, long last, and elite water filters do NOT contain any media intended to add anything to the water passing through the filter. However, some Brita-compatible water filters do add antioxidants to your water and raise the pH of your water to make it more alkaline.

Not all Brita or Brita-compatible filters just make your drinking water taste better! You can also use Brita-compatible water filters that contain alkaline-raising mineral balls to increase the pH of your drinking water as well as make your drinking water taste better.

What Is In A Brita Water Filter?

Brita water filters contain 3 filtering stages:

Filtering Mesh:

A Brita water filter has a layer of filtering mesh at the top and bottom of the filter to prevent water sediment or debris from entering the filter from the top and enclosing the filtering media at the bottom.

Activated Charcoal:

Carbon pellets of water filters

Activated charcoal is great for removing Chlorine, Pesticides, and organic impurities from the water that can cause the water to have undesirable odors and tastes.

Pores in the activated carbon trap gasses such as hydrogen sulfide gas which creates a “Rotten Egg Smell” and Chlorine which makes your water smell like bleach and gives water a bitter chemical taste.

Ion-Exchange Resin:

Ion-exchange resin reduces calcium carbonate which is the primary contributor to hard water and heavy metals such as lead and copper which are unhealthy to consume.

Does The Carbon In A Brita Water Filter Add Anything To Water?

Activated carbon does not add anything to your drinking water as the water flows through a Brita filter. The carbon grains only trap impurities from your drinking water in the openings of the carbon.

Does The Activated Carbon In A Brita Filter Break Down?

Carbon does break down over time but any carbon released from the activated carbon during the suggested life of a Brita water filter would be very minimal and harmless.

The activated carbon in a Brita water filter can contain small amounts of carbon dust which may come out of the water filter and make your initial Brita-filtered water look cloudy but this should clear as the carbon dust works its way out of the filter.

Does The Ion Exchange Resin In A Brita Filter Add Anything To Water?

The ion-exchange resin used in a Brita water filter is made of insoluble polymer beads that do not add anything to your drinking water. Ion-exchange resin in a Brita water filter is only for the reduction of hard minerals and heavy metals in your water.

Does The Ion Exchange Resin In A Brita Filter Break Down?

Ion-exchange resin does NOT break down to any significant amount during the recommended lifespan of a Brita water filter. The polymer beads used in a Brita water filter take many years to break down and should be recycled after the filter has been used.

Is There A Filter That Adds Beneficial Minerals To My Drinking Water?

Yes, there is!

You can use a 5-stage Brita-compatible water filter in your Brita dispenser that will not only make your drinking water taste better, but it will also add minerals to your drinking water that will raise the pH of your drinking water as well as eliminate harmful oxidation levels.

With 2 additional stages to increase the pH of your water and eliminate harmful oxidation levels in addition to reducing impurities that can affect the taste of your water and cause odors, you can use a Brita-compatible alkaline filter to improve the overall quality of your drinking water.

To Sum Up!

Brita water filters are designed to reduce impurities from your drinking water to reduce or eliminate odors in the water and to improve the taste of the water.

Only some Brita-compatible water filters add beneficial minerals to your drinking water to increase the pH of your drinking water and help eliminate harmful oxidation levels in your drinking water.
